News from British Columbia

By Eric Stewart, British Columbia Provincial Co-ordinator

This school year saw a record 46 schools participating in Schoolreach in BC. The Vancouver Zone led with sixteen participants, followed by Richmond with seven, the North Shore and Burnaby/Surrey with six and Maple Ridge/Mission with four schools. It was also very encouraging to see eight schools from the Interior and Vancouver Island competing this year.

Our intermediate tournament was hosted by Windermere School on March and prominent reach coach, Maggie Przyborowska. The gold medal school was University Hill (Vancouver), followed by silver medal winner Windermere (Vancouver) and bronze recipient, St. George's (Vancouver). The Intermediate trophy and medals were presented to these schools.

The Senior tournament required a seeding round to determine the top 16 schools among 38 that participated on April 13 at Burnett Secondary in Richmond. Many thanks to Sunny Gill and Patrick Anderson for organizing the largest tournament of its kind. During the following two weeks, these teams played on Knowledge Network based on their seeding placement. The eventual winners were St. George's (Vancouver) in a one point match, followed by Winston Churchill (Vancouver) and in their first year of competition, Windsor Secondary (North Vancouver). Trophies and medals were presented and the top two schools will represent the province at the nationals.

My sincere thanks to all coaches who guided their teams through countless practices, games and tournaments to make this the best year in our 18 year association with BC Schoolreach.

Congratulations to St. George’s School team members: Jon Choi, Jason Dowlatabadi, Daniel Siu, Desmond Jung, Curt Cha, Ermer Wang, Andrew Warren, Zorbey Turkalp and Coach: Eric Stewart
