News from Alberta
ByChris Zarski, Alberta Provincial Co-ordinatorThe Junior/Intermediate Provincials for Alberta saw everyone traveling to Whitecourt, Alberta where we enjoyed the hospitality of Hilltop High School supported by Percy Baxter School and under the coordination of Pat Mattson. The two days were wonderful with excellent competition. The teams attending were:
Juniors: Calmar, Percy Baxter, St. Augustine, Trochu, Onoway, Elnora, Andrew, Gerard Redmond.
Intermediates: Hunting Hills, Onoway, Bert Church, Lacombe Jr. High, Calmar, Hilltop, West Island, Ponoka, Trochu, Gerard Redmond.
After two days of competition, we would like to congratulate Calmar School as the Provincial Intermediate Champions defeating Hunting Hills in a close 280 – 250 final. Onoway placed third defeating Hilltop by a score of 350 – 240.
In our Junior Division, Calmar came out on top once more defeating Percy Baxter by a score of 290 – 180.It was a clean sweep for Calmar’s dynamic teams this year! Congratulations to Jeanette Wilson for her awesome coaching and to Junior members: Hayden Mills, Peter Foster, William de Martines, Jaason Timmons, How Li, Stephanie Zak and Intermediate members: Logan Mills, Helen de Martines, Jenna Craig, Abby Vanderberghe, Daren Williams.
Each of the attending teams had an MVP recognized at the banquet luncheon as well as the Spirit Team awards were handed out going to Calmar in the junior division and Gerard Redmond in the Intermediate Division.
We thank all the coaches for their support and involvement this year and look forward to seeing many teams back at Provincials 2008 in TROCHU! Thanks to the Trochu team for stepping up and hosting next year!
Early May saw 10 teams from around Alberta head to Edmonton for the Senior Reach For the Top Provincials. A two pool round robin tournament took place with teams being ranked as follows heading into the provincial play downs:
- West Island – Calgary
- Harry Ainlay – Edmonton
- Bert Church – Airdrie
- Hunting Hills – Red Deer
- Wetaskiwin Comp – Wetaskiwin
- Gerard Redmond – Hinton
- Hilltop High – Whitecourt
- Andrew School – Andrew
- Calmar – Calmar
- Bert Church 2 – Airdrie
Specials thanks go out to the coaches at Harry Ainlay School for allowing us to use the school for the seeding tournament and to Bill and Jeanette Wilson for use of the buzzer systems and their additional help. The Crew at CLT couldn’t have been better and our host, Dave Kelly, again won the hearts of the students! A great year and with many thanks to the coaches who spend the hours with the students practicing and encouraging them. Your efforts do not go unnoticed.
