News from New Brunswick

By Sean Newlands and Jonathan Logan, New Brunswick Provincial Co-ordinators

The past year was another busy one for New Brunswick Reach for the Top students and advisors. The 2008-2009 Reach for the Top season had an exciting beginning with invitational tournaments held in Oromocto on December 6th, with 20 teams competing. Kennebecasis Valley High #1 was the winner in the “A” Final. The next invitational tournament was held at Kenebecasis Valley High on February 7th with KVHS winners in the “A” Final. The third tournament was held at Saint John High on March 14th where KVHS again was victorious in the “A” Final. The last invitational tournament was held at Rothesay-Netherwood School on March 28th with KVHS continuing their domination and again the “A” winner. Congratulations to all the invitational tournament winners in both “A” and “B” divisions as well as all of the participants, as we were all winners, going home with more knowledge than before.

The Provincial Tournament was hosted by Oromocto High School on April 18th, with 10 teams competing in the Championship Section and 15 teams competing in the Non-Championship Section. Kennebecasis High was victorious over St. Malachy’s High in the Championship final in an excellent, fast paced game. Kennebecasis Valley High was a formidable opponent again this season as they did not lose a single game during the entire season.

St. Malachy’s High School emerged as a very competitive team all season and was invited to the National Tournament as the Provincial Runner-Up but was unable to attend.

Students and advisors are all looking forward to another exciting full season of Reach for the Top in New Brunswick next year. Once again, Thank you to all the coaches/advisors, tournament organizers, volunteer quizmasters and the many others for the time you gave to the success of Reach for the Top in New Brunswick during the 2008-2009 school year.

Have a wonderful summer vacation.

Congratulations to the Champion, Kennebecasis Valley High School and team members Michael Forestall, Josh Koncovy, Nick Manuel, Alexander Maxan, Stephen Spence, Jordan Woods, and Coach Jason Thorne.
