News from New Brunswick

By Sean Newlands and Jonathan Logan, New Brunswick Provincial Co-ordinators

The past year was another busy one for New Brunswick Reach for the Top students and advisors. The 2009-2010 Reach for the Top season had an exciting beginning with invitational tournaments held at Rothesay-Netherwood School on December 5th. Kennebecasis Valley High #1 was the winner in the “A” Final. The next invitational tournament was held at Kenebecasis High on Feb. 13th with KVHS winners in “A” Final. The third tournament was held at Sussex Regional High on March 20th where KVHS again was victorious in the “A” Final. The final invitational tournament was held at Bernice McNaughton High School on April 10th with KVHS continuing their domination and again the “A” winner. Congratulations to all the invitational tournament winners in both “A” and “B” divisions as well as all of the participants as we were all winners, coming home with more knowledge than when we arrived.

The Provincial Tournament was hosted by Nackawic High School on April 24th with 8 teams competing in the Championship Section and 12 teams competing in the Non-Championship Section. Kennebecasis High was victorious over Oromocto High in the Championship final in an excellent, fast paced game to claim the Provincial Championship. Kennebecasis High was a formidable opponent again this season as they did not lose a single game during the entire season. Oromocto emerged as a very competitive team all season and were invited to the National tournament as the Provincial Runner- Up. We wish the KVHS and Oromocto every success at the National Tournament in Toronto.

Students and advisors are all looking forward to another exciting full season of Reach for the Top in New Brunswick next year. Have a wonderful summer vacation. Talk to you in the fall.

Congratulations to the Champion, Kennebecasis Valley H.S. team members Jordan Woods, Josh Koncovy, Josh Outerbridge, David MacFarquhar, Michael Forestell, Alexander Maxan, Kyle Mason, and Coach: Jason Thorne.
